Mr James Chan is a Consultant Plastic Reconstructive Surgeon specialising in hand surgery, general plastic surgery and complex reconstructive surgery. His practice is centred on delivering evidence-based care that is tailored to each patient’s individual needs, whether through surgical or non-surgical treatment.
Mr Chan is fully registered on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register as an accredited Plastic Surgeon. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and a member of both the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) and the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH). His NHS practice spans several hospitals within Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, including Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Wycombe General Hospital, Amersham Hospital, and the National Spinal Injuries Centre. He also holds an Honorary Lecturership at the University of Oxford.
After qualifying in Medicine from the University of Cambridge in 2004, Mr Chan undertook junior doctor posts in East Anglia and London before completing Higher Surgical Training in Plastic Surgery on the Oxford rotation. He received a Travelling Bursary from BAPRAS to pursue further subspecialty training in Reconstructive Microsurgery at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. This advanced training has equipped him to manage both routine and complex surgical cases.
In addition to his clinical work, Mr Chan is actively involved in research and education. He holds a Clinical Lectureship at the University of Oxford, where he was a Senior Scholar and awarded a DPhil (PhD). He also completed a fellowship at Cochrane UK, focusing on evidence synthesis and dissemination in medicine. His academic contributions include publications in peer-reviewed journals, authorship in standard plastic surgery textbooks, and involvement in national guidance on traumatic limb reconstruction. His research has been supported by awards and grants from institutions such as the Wellcome Trust, the Academy of Medical Sciences, the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh, and BAPRAS.
Committed to surgical education, Mr Chan is a GMC-recognised trainer and serves on the Education and Training Committee of BSSH. He serves as Deputy Editor of the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery and peer-reviewer for other international journals. He also runs a national microsurgery training course, and regularly presents at national and international conferences. He hosts various educational podcasts including Stoke Mandeville Plastics and The Rest is Plastics (JPRAS).
