Mr Jonathan Yu

Mr. Jonathan Yu is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in Glaucoma and Cataract surgery at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. He completed his medical education at the University of Cambridge, graduating in 2010, and went on to undertake higher specialty training in Ophthalmology across the West Midlands and North West regions of the UK. He then completed two additional years of sub-specialist fellowship training in Glaucoma surgery at both Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.

Mr. Yu is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a member of both the UK and Éire Glaucoma Society (UKEGS) and the European Glaucoma Society (EGS). His clinical practice is focused on managing various types of glaucoma and anterior segment issues, including complex cataract cases. He operates a specialist glaucoma service serving the North West and beyond, with particular interests in surgical techniques such as trabeculectomy, aqueous shunt devices, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), and glaucoma laser procedures. He also performs micro-incision cataract surgery and the latest combined cataract and glaucoma stent surgery.

In addition to his clinical work, Mr. Yu plays a significant role in education and training. He is actively involved in teaching junior doctors, fellows, optometrists, specialist nurses, and medical students. He also participates in clinical sessions at the Emergency Eye Centre at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, overseeing the treatment of a broad range of acute and emergency eye conditions.

Mr. Yu is passionate about ophthalmic education and blindness prevention. He contributes to a global initiative aimed at educating junior ophthalmologists through GERSO (Global Education in Retinal Surgery Organization), where he chairs international webinars to mentor the next generation of eye specialists. Furthermore, he has participated in outreach cataract programs in countries such as Cambodia, where he helps treat patients and train fellow ophthalmologists.
