Mr Richard Adamson

Mr Adamson went to Newcastle University Medical School and graduated in 1994. He then went on to complete his Basic Surgical Training in the North-East of England and his ENT specialist training in Edinburgh. As part of his training he spent time abroad in Dundee, Iowa (USA) and Christchurch (New Zealand). On returning he was then appointed as a Consultant Head and Neck surgeon in Fife for two years. His current appointment is as lead clinician for Head and Neck Cancer Services in the Department of Otolaryngology in Edinburgh.

His interests are thyroid disease, salivary gland disease, voice and swallowing problems. He is an expert in the assessment and management of neck lumps and runs the only private one-stop neck lump assessment clinic in Scotland.

Mr Adamson is currently the only ENT surgeon who is a member of the Thyroid Cancer team based at the Royal Infirmary and is also a member of the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons. He is currently the only surgeon in the South East of Scotland undertaking surgery for advanced metastatic thyroid cancers.

Mr Adamson has a strong research background in swallowing and voice problems including a Masters Degree in advanced swallowing and voice research awarded with merit from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He holds an honorary senior lecturership with the University of Edinburgh and is actively involved with training both medical students and postgraduate doctors. He sits on both the Core Surgical Training Committee for Scotland and the ENT Speciality Training Committee for the East of Scotland surgical trainees.
