About Mr Max Whittaker

Mr Max Whittaker is a Consultant and clinical lead in Otolaryngology at Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, London. He has extensive specialist experience in the treatment of ear infections, hearing loss, ear drum perforations, cholesteatoma, dizziness and balance disorders in adults and children, and is one of the few surgeons offering minimally invasive endoscopic ear surgery. He has a high level of clinical and surgical expertise in a wide range of general and emergency Otolaryngology conditions, and his current practice offers regular adult and paediatric ENT clinics and operating sessions.

He is known for his strong communication skills and formulating management strategies with the patient's best interest and needs at heart. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic he has restructured the department to incorporate remote consultations and telemedicine to reduce the need for patients to travel and come in contact with others, and pioneered the North East London Teleotology programme.

After completing Specialist training across numerous centres of excellence in London and South East England, he undertook a Fellowship in Otology & Skull Base Surgery at Guys & St Thomas Hospitals, as well as Observerships at the world-renowned House Institute in California, and at Toronto General Hospital focusing on Endoscopic Ear Surgery.

He continued to pursue his research interests while achieving a Master Degree with Distinction in Audiovestibular Medicine at the Ear Institute, University College London. This has provided him with specific expertise in Neurotology and the management of dizziness and vertigo. His work has been presented at conferences both nationally and internationally.

Mr Max Whittaker was informative and very polite. I have no issues with his approach however I found dealing with his secretary Branca very unpleasant. When approached to settle an invoice I contacted Bupa and simply went by their instructions to check in with Branca. She often spoke over me , did not listen or allow me to finish my point, to me this was very unprofessional and left a negative feeling towards the whole experience. Mistakes happen in life and she was very quick to play the blame game however it can help if she can perhaps listen to patients and be more polite in her approach.

I have a recurring problem. Thought the problem is the ear. I learned it's the Eustachian tube. Actually, I saw it and got an explanation that made lots of sense to me. Finally, I got clear instructions of what I need to do. All very conclusive, clear, and in an atmosphere of trust. Great experience.

Mr Whittaker has an excellent manner in which he interacts with patients. He made me feel calm throughout my procedure, and explained everything clearly and in a way that made sense to a none medical person. A huge thank you to him!
