Mr Paul Cleaveland is a Consultant Urologist with a practice in general urology and subspecialist expertise in robotic pelvic oncology and the management of prostate, bladder and testicular cancers. He graduated from the University of Birmingham Medical School in 2009 and moved to Manchester to complete foundation training, followed by core surgical training and urology specialty training across the North West. During this time, he also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Workplace-Based Medical Education at Edge Hill University.
His interest in robotic and pelvic oncology surgery began during placements at The Christie Hospital and Stepping Hill Hospital. After completing specialist urology training, he undertook a prestigious fellowship in robotic pelvic urological oncology at University College London Hospitals—the highest-volume centre for this surgery in the UK. Here, he trained extensively in robotic radical prostatectomy, robotic cystectomy, urinary diversion, and open reconstructive pelvic cancer surgery. He further enhanced his expertise during an observership at the renowned Martini-Klinik in Hamburg, Europe’s leading prostatectomy centre.
In 2020, Mr Cleaveland was appointed as a Consultant Urologist at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust. The team at Stockport has performed more than 1,000 robotic prostatectomies, and Mr Cleaveland offers the Retzius-sparing robotic prostatectomy, a technique shown to significantly improve early urinary continence recovery in men undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. He provides state-of-the-art diagnostic pathways for suspected prostate cancer, including MRI and ultrasound-guided transperineal targeted biopsies.
He is also experienced in the investigation and treatment of bladder cancer, performing flexible cystoscopy, transurethral resection of bladder tumours (TURBT), and laser ablation. Beyond oncology, Mr Cleaveland manages benign prostatic disease and male urinary symptoms, offering both medical therapy and surgical interventions such as bipolar TURP, Rezum watervaporisation of the porstate and robotic simple prostatectomy. His broader practice includes treatment of urinary incontinence, urinary stones and infections, as well as procedures including circumcision, hydrocoele repair, vasectomy and orchidectomy.
Mr Cleaveland teaches and examines medical students at Manchester University, interviews for national urology trainee selection, and serves as faculty for the FRCS (Urol) revision course. He also trains regional specialty trainees and international fellows in robotic surgery and general urology. Within his Trust, he is the cancer lead for urology and plays an active role in developing cancer pathways, improving diagnostic services, and leading quality-improvement initiatives.
He has contributed to patient education by producing pre-operative information videos for complex urological procedures, helping to enhance understanding and the consenting process. His academic work includes multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters, with presentations delivered at major international urology and robotic surgery conferences.

Thoroughly professional but with genuine empathy and respect.
He was so calm and clear with the results and so positive
Fantastic explanation of my issue with a plan to overcome it with aftercare.
I have had several visits to Urology At Stepping Hill. My wife and I met with Mr Cleveland prior to my prostatectomy and again in clinic 6 weeks later for the post op feedback and support. (7/5/26)He explained everything to us most clearly, answered all of our questions and he reassured us that the recovery was going well and as expected. He gave a feeling of confidence and we have found him really supportive at a most challenging and upsetting time. This has made the whole procedure much more bearable overall. Thank you to him and his whole team. We are very grateful to everyone.
I first saw Mr Cleaveland in relation to my concerns regarding a family history of prostate cancer. I found him to be extremely empathic, reassuring and an excellent listener. Due to my expressed concerns, he undertook PSA testing, prostate examination and also facilitated access to a Multi-parametric MRI scan. He also carried out a prostate biopsy, through which he was able to diagnose early stage prostate cancer. Mr Cleaveland outlined very clearly all the possible options available for treating this condition and did this at my pace, providing all the required information in a balanced and sensitive manner. I elected for Mr Cleaveland to perform a nerve sparing robotic prostatectomy and, thanks to his skills, knowledge and clinical expertise, he undertook this complex surgical procedure without any complications and was able to confirm that my cancer was removed. I have subsequently experienced excellent post surgical recovery, and in particular, a very swift return to full continence, together with a gradual return to sexual function. As a urological surgeon and consultant, I cannot recommend Mr Cleaveland highly enough.
Excellent appointment with Mr Cleveland. Had blood sample taken by a nice nurse.
Mr, Cleaveland answered each question I put to him, went into details of the procedures I asked about, kind and patient ,
