Mr Shakir Husain, MBBS, FRCS (Tr & Orth)
Primary and Revision Hip and Knee arthroplasty / Hip Resurfacing surgeon
Mr Shakir Hussain is an experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in Lower Limb Surgery. He sees private patients at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, The Priory Hospital and The Harborne Hospital (HCA healthcare UK). Mr Hussain completed basic surgical training in Birmingham and Bristol and the higher speciality training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the Birmingham Orthopaedic Training Programme. He obtained FRCS (Trauma & Orthopaedic) in 2019 and CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) in 2020.
Mr Hussain's expertise in managing complex problems of the hip and knee joints is the result of an advanced fellowship in lower limb arthroplasty in well-established centres in the UK, including Nottingham, The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and North Bristol Trust. These fellowships provided him with advanced experience and unique insights. His dedication to his field was recognized with the prestigious British Hip Society travelling fellowship, which allowed him to visit the ENDO-Klinik Hamburg Germany, a centre of excellence for joint replacements, and learn their unique methods of dealing with infected joint replacements.
Mr Hussain is a lower limb arthroplasty surgeon with a special interest in Hip resurfacing arthroplasty. His expertise in this field is unparalleled, making him a trusted choice for patients. Hip resurfacing is an anatomical and bone-conserving hip surgery for young, active individuals with hip arthritis who wish to maintain high-level activities, including sports. Mr Hussain performs Hip and Knee joint replacements, redo surgeries for failed hip and knee joint replacements, and fixation or replacement of periprosthetic fractures. He also has a special interest in the management of prosthetic joint infections. Mr Hussain uses a variety of hip implants ranging from Birmingham hip resurfacing (BHR) to complex revision prostheses and Endoprosthetic replacements for cases with severe bone loss to improve patients' function and quality of life. He also uses the latest technologies in arthroplasty, i.e. robotic-assisted joint replacement. Mr Hussain has been performing day-case arthroplasty surgery for suitable patients, where patients are safely discharged after a hip or knee replacement surgery on the same day.
Mr Hussain's commitment to patient care is evident in his receipt of the Outstanding Patient Experience award consecutively in the last 2 years (2024 and 2025) from Docitfy. He is a member of various quality improvement committees at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, where he actively works to improve service quality and patient satisfaction. His recent appointment as a Clinical Service Lead for the Royal Orthopaedics Hospital Outpatient Department further demonstrates his dedication to enhancing patient care. In addition to his clinical work, Mr Hussain has completed multiple research projects and has been awarded various academic prizes. He has contributed to multiple Orthopaedic studies, including randomised control trials of Robotic-assisted joint replacement surgery. Mr Hussain has authored a textbook chapter about hip replacement and has published several scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. Mr Shakir Hussain is friendly, professional, and caring. He makes patients feel at ease and explains everything clearly. Many report life-changing outcomes after his hip resurfacing, hip replacement, and knee replacement procedures. Most feedback points to successful joint surgery.
Very detailed explanation regarding my surgical procedure providing me with total confidence. The post operation consultation was also very thorough and explained why I needed surgery
In for my 12 week checkup which showed no issues. Hip replacement has been very successful. First time having surgery and the advise and service has been excellent. Recovery following guidelines has been quick and mostly pain free.
I had extreme osteoarthritis, with severe restrictions, affecting my ability to go about normal life The operation was hugely successful. I have restored flexibility, movement and I am pain free. Mr Shakir Hussain was incredibly professional, expert, and personable. He gave me huge confidence going into the operation. And I am now hoping to have another operation, on the other hip, soon.
At 57 and still very active, hip resurfacing seemed the best option for me. Dr Hussain is one of the most experienced surgeons performing this procedure, and that played a major part in my decision. I couldn’t be happier with the result. From the moment I first mobilised after surgery, the hip felt stable, natural and secure. The pain reduced very quickly, and the grinding pain I had before surgery disappeared completely. My recovery has exceeded expectations: I was able to walk 1 mile after 2 weeks, progressing to 5 miles pain-free after 5 weeks. I have also returned to cycling and swimming. Throughout the process, Dr Hussain and his team were professional, reassuring and supportive. I would highly recommend him to any active person considering hip resurfacing
Mr Hussain is a professional, empathetic and truly kind surgeon. His bedside manner is caring and both informative and open. After dealing with Mr Hussain, over three years, I would not hesitate to recommend him wholeheartedly
Appointment today was for my 1st year blood test, X-Ray and consultation, was met as always with by friendly staff, and the consultation with Mr Hussains team was great, Mr Hussain even called me on the way home as he is genuinely interested in sporting events coming up and has asked for regular updates
First class treatment...pre surgery, all options discussed and explained with possible risks associated, surgery went well with little pain post surgery (possibly due to robotic surgery?). Post surgery aftercare 1st class
Mr Hussain was polite and most helpful explaining the various options following scans
Excellent care Time was taken to talk to me about everything.
Mr Hussain is a highly regarded colleague who puts the care of his patients as his priority. I have no hesitation in recommending him to patients and often refer patients with hip conditions to him for hip replacement surgery

One can not put it any better: The significance of shared decision-making cannot be overstated. It's essential to recognize that this responsibility is one we all share, regardless of the complexity of the procedure involved. The successful outcome of the procedure greatly improved her quality of life and served as a testament to the potential of such interventions, which were meticulously planned and clearly explained.
